3/3 – 3/5/12
Our first trip to Spring Training in Arizona was also our first father/son trip. We flew out in the morning and rented a big Dodge Extended Cab pickup. We drove straight to Goodyear and went to a game. The Reds and Indians were playing. Trey got his first autograph from a pitcher named Sam Leclerc on a squishy, used t-ball. We watched some of the game and explored the park. They have a wiffle ball park out in the outfield, so we spent some time playing there. After the game, we had dinner at a diner and had pie. Trey thought we were being sneaky because I joked that we couldn’t tell mom. Then we checked into our hotel, the Hampton Inn in Surprise, and watched Spider Man.
The next day, we got up early to go to the Rangers practice in Surprise. Trey did a good job getting autographs of Mike Napoli, Derek Holland and Josh Hamilton, among others. We also thought it was pretty cool to walk amongst the players and watch them practice. After practice, we went to a game and sat on the grass in the outfield. We didn’t’ stay for the whole game as we started to get a little sunburned.
Our last day, we got up early and had a game of catch, and then went to Rangers practice again. Trey got more autographs. We left practice and went to Glendale to watch the Dodgers play the White Sox. Outside of the stadium, we saw Charlie Hough jogging and then saw Tommy Lasorda heading to the game. We enjoyed watching the game and exploring Camelback Ranch stadium. We had to leave the game early to catch our flight home.
