3/9 – 3/12/2012
For Christmas, Dale and I surprised our families with a trip to New York and tickets to see Wicked over Spring Break. We both had our families open a gift on Christmas morning with a packet I put together about the trip. They were so excited. This would be the Picketts first time in New York. We had a great time showing them the sites.
On the Friday after work, we all flew to New York. Susan and Jeri flew first class on American Airlines. Dale and I and the kids flew on United. We were flying different times and airports, so we just met at our hotel, the Westin Times Square. The hotel was in a great location, but the rooms were a little small. I used points for all the flights and hotels. We all arrived at the Westin and then went out to explore Times Square and get hot dogs.
Saturday was really busy. We bought a 3-day pass for the Gray Line double-decker bus, so we started using it and were able to cover lots of ground. We started off exploring the big Toys R Us in Times Square. We toured Manhattan and went into Macy’s and the Empire State Building. We went to China Town and Little Italy and had pizza at Lomardi’s. We saw Wall Street and Rockefeller Center and we had cupcakes at Magnolias bakery. That night, we went to see Wicked. It was our 2nd or 3rd time, and we loved it as much as ever.
The next day, we did the bus tour again. We went to Dylan’s Candy bar and had lunch at Serendipity. We went to the Natural History Museum. Then, spent lots of time exploring Central Park and FAO Schwartz and the Apple store. That night, we ate at Shake Shack, got cheesecake at Juniors and the girls got their picture taken with the Naked Cowboy in Times Square.
On Monday, we started the Morning at the Today Show. We saw Elle McPhereson, leaving the show. Next, we did ground zero. After that, we went across to New Jersey and went to Carlos Bakery from the T.V. show Cake Boss. For lunch, we had pizza on the street. We also took the Staten Island Ferry so we could get a good view of the Statue of Liberty. That evening, we went to Mary Poppins. We got cheap tickets from the TKTS booth. After the show, we ate a Chevy’s Mexican Food in Times Square. We saw Ricky Martin later that night, leaving a show that he is in.
Our last day, Dale and I got up early and went back to the Today show. We were able to get lots of screen time, so we called the girls so they could see us. The girls joined us, so we went to Times Square and walked around some more. We stood outside the ABC morning show and And we also ran into Lily Collins. She was nice to stop and take a photo with the kids. After that, we went into Grand Central Station, then we walked past David Letterman’s Late Show studio. We got to see Martin Short entering the building. It was time to go home. The Pickett’s were flying together, on a different flight than us, so we said our goodbyes and they took a taxi to the airport. We stayed a few more hours before we had to go to the airport.
It was an awesome trip. It was pretty cold some days, but it was bearable. We enjoyed being with the Pickett’s for their first trip to NYC. We thought it was funny that Maddie bought a t-shirt at every place we went.
