10/5 – 10/7/12
We had always wanted to go to the balloon festival in Albuquerque. We had been to the Plano balloon festival a lot and had heard that the one in Albuquerque was so much bigger. So, we took the family on a weekend trip. Albuquerque is a short trip from Dallas on Southwest, and we were able to use our Companion passes so the kids could fly for free. We stayed at the Sheraton and thought is was pretty poor.
The first night, we went straight to the Balloon Festival. They were supposed to have a big glow at night, but it was pretty windy, so not many balloons were actually inflated and launched.
The next morning, we got up early and went to the festival. There was to be a mass ascension. The weather cooperated and tons of balloons were launched. The Balloon Festival is really fun with lots of booths for food and stuff. You can also just walk amongst the balloons, even when they are inflating and launching.
We also got to spend some time in Albuquerque. We took the gondola up to the mountain, Sandia Peak. We also walked around and shopped in Old Town.
