March 8-12, 2014
For Spring Break, we wanted to go on a trip with our friends the McKowns. Together we thought Lake Tahoe would be fun trip. We flew to Reno on Southwest using points and our companion pass. It was a bit of pain because we had to stop at 2 places along the way and back, but we survived. We did have a few hour layover in Las Vegas, so we got a cab and showed the kids some of the strip and the Bellagio conservatory. The McKowns flew to San Francisco and met us in Tahoe. We stayed at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe Resort and Spa. I used Diamond suite upgrades for both of our rooms. I called ahead and they upgraded us to the cottages. The cottages we basically condos, set away from the main hotel.
The resort had a heated pool and a couple of hot tubs, a casino, a spa and a lounge for Diamond members. We had breakfast in the lounge every morning and usually had snacks and deserts at night. One night, we all went to the pool. It was on the cold side, so the adults stayed in the hot tub most of the time while the kids played in the pool. Getting in the pool that night, Bill touched “something” on the pool railing and got grossed out pretty bad. He spent the rest of the night gagging.
The first day we went skiing at Heavenly. This is probably the most popular of the ski resorts in the area. We met up with with 2 other Rockwall families for skiing that day, the Avery’s and Wursters. The kids all took lessons that day and the adults skied. Bill and Susan don’t ski, so Susan worked on JBF and Bill hit the casino. At the end of the day, we ate at a pizza place at the bottom of the slope to celebrate a couple of the kids birthdays.
The next day, we went back to Heavenly for another day of skiing. Because of wind, the main gondola was closed, so we had to go to a different lift area. Chrissy and I skied with the kids all day. They did great. They kids loved going down the run with all the jumps and ramps on it. It was a beautiful day and Heavenly is amazing.
At the end of skiing on day 2, we had dinner with the Avery’s and Wursters at their hotel. They were staying at the Marriott at the base of the mountain.
The third day, we went to a Northstar to do some tubing. The tubing was not great, but I thought the Northstar mountain and resort area was really cool. It had a Ritz Carlton and Marriott at the base as well as an ice skating rink and tons of restaurants and shops.
Back at the Hyatt, when we arrived, they gave Natalie and Cole smore kits for their birthdays. We went out to one of the fire pits and had smores. After that, we put a movie on for the kids and the adults went to the spa. The Hyatt was not close to the 2 mountains we went too, but it was a really impressive place with lots of amenities.
