Africa Trip – Nairobi – Sunday, June 22

At 5a.m. we woke up when the mosque next door had their “call to worship” over the loud speaker for about 10 minutes. That freaked me out a little so I couldn’t go back to sleep. We had breakfast at the hotel and headed to church.

The drive was crazy. There were goats and cows on the road and even a dead goat in the middle of the road. They drive crazy and pedestrians walk right in front of the cars. There were “shops” in little shacks on the sides of the roads selling furniture.

We made it to the Fountain of Life Church and boys home. As we got off the bus we were surrounded by children that wanted
to shake each person’s hands. We got to play with the kids from the neighborhood and then had worship service. The
church had much more “feeling” in their singing than we are used to and it was great. The service lasted over 2 hours and
Aaron Swanson preached for everyone with an interpreter.

They served us lunch Chibuti bread? YUM! Then we played with the kids. We tried to organize “stations” and have the
kids rotate through, but it ended up being chaos. They loved reading stories from the Children’s Bible and as soon as I
sat down on the ground to start to read I was surrounded in seconds by all the children fighting to see. After playing
with the kids we were asked to tell them all a Bible story on the stage so we read the story of Jonah while our children
acted it out for them.

In the late afternoon we drove to Naomi’s Village. It was supposed to take about 1.5 hours, but we got stuck in some
traffic and it seems to take all afternoon, especially because I got car sick. I was praying that I would not get sick
the whole way.

Once we made it to Naomi’s Village we got to meet the kids. They sang “Happy Welcome to You” to the tune of “Happy
Birthday”. We get served dinner at our guest house. Then we headed to bed.

Naomi’s Village is a compound a few miles past the trucking town of Maahi Mahu and below the mountain town of Kijabe.  The gated compound is very secure with 24-hour guards, electric fence, razor wire and dogs.  It a very safe environment to keep the baboons and other animals out, as well as people.  They have a really nice guest house that sleeps 12 boys and 12 girls.  They also have a family room in the back.
